Are you between 7 and 16?
If so, The Young Friends of the Cathedral may be of interest to you.
John Richardson is the leader of this group. He is a local headteacher who is keen to promote the Young Friends as an opportunity for young people to develop an interest in, and support for, the Cathedral.
The intention is for the Young Friends to have up to three meetings per year in the holidays to learn more about the Cathedral, explore the building and take part in activities.
If you are between 7 and 16 and are interested in becoming a Young Friend of the Cathedral please ask your parents to contact John by writing to the Friends' Office, 18a Minster Yard, LINCOLN, LN2 1PX or leaving your name and contact details.
The first meeting of the recently reformed Young Friends took place on Saturday 3rd January 2009, when four new members were treated to an excellent tour of the Cathedral by Janet Allsworth and the opportunity to do some rubbings. This was followed by lunch in the Cathedral Coffee Shop. One of our members, Victoria, wrote this of the first meeting:
I have recently joined the Young Friends of Lincoln Cathedral. We met on a very cold day in January. I thought the Cathedral would be very cold but it was warm. First we assembled in the Ringers' Chapel and Mr Richardson talked to us and then we had a tour of the Cathedral. I saw lots of interesting things like the Lincoln Imp, lots of Statues, The Bishop's Eye and a tomb which had a carving of a bishop fully clothed on top and then underneath a carving of him wasted away in his grave. That was creepy!
There are lots of tombstones in the floor at the East end and I did some rubbings of them. They came out really well. I did two pictures which I enjoyed doing.
I met lots of people especially a girl called Libby who is very friendly like the older people in the Cathedral.
After that we went to the Cafe and had our lunch which was very nice.
I hope lots of other girls and boys will join us because it is fun.
